Fernando Tatis Jr. and Newcomer Austin Hays Power Padres to 7-2 Victory over Astros
Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in three runs and Austin Hays homered in his San Diego debut as the Padres improved to 12 wins in 16 games.
On Sunday, the San Diego Padres defeated the Houston Astros 7-2, with home runs by Fernando Tatis Jr., Austin Hays, Jackson Merrill, and Gavin Sheets securing the rubber match victory.
Houston initiated the scoring in the second inning when Daulton Varsho clubbed a 395-foot two-run homer, but Padres starter Randy Vasquez responded by allowing only two hits and two runs over five innings.
Tatis hit a 421-foot drive to the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in the fourth inning, giving San Diego a 4-2 lead; it was his 11th homer of the year.
Pinch-Hitter Austin Hays, signed earlier Sunday, connected for a two-run shot in his first at-bat, while Gavin Sheets homered in the sixth, his 15th of the season, adding insurance runs.
The victory keeps the Padres one game behind Arizona and Philadelphia for the National League's final wild-card spots, while Houston remains a half-game ahead of the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
