Padres beat Cubs 4-1, sweep series, advance to NLDS against Brewers
Gavin Sheets delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer, and San Diego’s bullpen held Chicago to one run in the series.
The San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs with a 4-1 victory Wednesday night, clinching the National League Wild Card Series at Petco Park and advancing to the National League Division Series.
A year after being knocked out of the National League Wild Card series by Chicago at Wrigley Field, the Padres returned the favor, riding a 19-3 surge since September 5.
Pinch-Hitter Gavin Sheets provided critical insurance with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, while the Padres' bullpen delivered 5.2 innings of scoreless relief to seal the sweep.
San Diego now travels to face the MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series, with Game 1 scheduled for Saturday, October 3, at American Family Field.
The Padres won four of six meetings against Milwaukee during the regular season, marking the first postseason matchup between the clubs in franchise history.
