Potential for Aggressive Behaviour at Brunswick Complex Fire in Fraser Canyon
The out-of-control blaze is estimated at 65,310 hectares, and crews are using helicopters, hand guards and planned ignitions to slow its advance.
- The Ainslie Creek wildfire pushed downslope toward Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon overnight, with the blaze reaching 65,309 hectares as of Wednesday morning and causing significant debris and rock fall north of the Alexandra Bridge.
- Warmer, drier conditions throughout the week are expected to increase fire activity, with Environment Canada forecasting temperatures reaching 30°C in Merritt on Tuesday and winds gusting to 40 km/h.
- Crews mopped up around a successful planned ignition south of the fire's head on Tuesday, significantly reducing fuel to prevent further southern spread. Near Spius Creek, reduced fire behaviour allows personnel to directly attack the perimeter.
- Under an Area Restriction Order, Highway 1 remains closed for approximately 39 kilometres between Toll Road and Aspen Road due to significant debris and rock fall, addressing public and responder safety.
- A public information session on the Ainslie Creek wildfire is scheduled for Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Merritt Civic Centre, with representatives from BC Wildfire Service and regional agencies expected to attend.
