Maggie Kang Receives a Key to the City of Toronto at Departure Festival
The Toronto-born filmmaker behind KPop Demon Hunters was honored after the film became Netflix’s most-watched movie and spawned a record-breaking soundtrack.
- Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow presented filmmaker Maggie Kang with a key to the city on Thursday at the Departure Festival. The Korean-Canadian creator accepted the honor to celebrate her artistic accomplishments.
- Since its release, the Oscar-winning animated film "KPop Demon Hunters" has become Netflix's most-watched film of all time. The production also spawned a record-breaking soundtrack.
- Following the panel discussion, Mayor Chow surprised Kang on stage with the presentation. The filmmaker posed for photographs with the mayor and Cindy Gouveia, president of Sheridan College.
- Later on Thursday, Kang is expected to receive the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala. The recognition follows her surprise stage presentation.
- Teasing the next project during the earlier panel, Kang said she will apply significant pressure on herself to create a movie she wants to see. A sequel is already greenlit.
