Over 30 toys recalled from shops for asbestos this year
- More than 30 children's toys have been recalled across the UK this year after testing identified trace asbestos levels. Retailers including Tesco, Primark, Matalan, Smyths Toys, The Entertainer, Aldi, Argos, Asda and M&S removed the products from shelves.
- The affected toys contain sand from mines in China where asbestos fibers occur naturally and labeling rules are less rigorous. Inhaling microscopic fibers causes severe, long-term lung inflammation, scarring, and cancer.

- Minister for Product Safety Kate Dearden stated, "We're taking action with new measures to strengthen consumer protection and clamp down on irresponsible sellers." Consumers are urged to seal affected items in heavy-duty plastic bags and return them.
- Sue Davies, head of consumer protection policy, urged the Office for Product Safety and Standards to ensure rigorous checks on toys containing asbestos. The OPSS issued a technical advisory note for businesses in March to address testing gaps.
