OpenAI launches ChatGPT desktop app for Linux

The preview release gives Linux users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on supported distributions, as OpenAI responds to long-running demand.

  • On Tuesday, OpenAI launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, expanding the service across every major desktop operating system. The preview release addresses one of the most-requested platforms from developers.
  • Certain sectors of the developer community requested the tool reach their systems. OpenAI addressed this demand by releasing the preview version, fulfilling a significant gap for Linux users who previously lacked access.
  • Supported distributions include Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. These distributions act as bases for 'downstream' desktop variants which should also be compatible.
  • OpenAI trails competitor Anthropic, which released a Claude desktop app for Linux approximately one month ago. Anthropic's app supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
  • The new preview app provides access to ChatGPT Work and Codex, completing the desktop strategy for Linux users. This expansion makes the full suite of tools available to a broader technical audience.
