Ontario set to fund hip and knee replacements at private clinics

Ontario aims to improve timely access to hip and knee surgeries by funding up to 20,000 procedures at private clinics, increasing on-time treatment rates from 80% to 90%.

  • On Dec. 8, 2025, Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced Ontario will spend $125 million over two years to fund up to 20,000 orthopedic hip and knee surgeries at community surgical clinics.
  • Jones said the expansion aims to raise timely procedures from 80 per cent to 90 per cent of patients within clinically recommended timeframes, building on prior private delivery of 40,000 eye surgeries in the past year and added MRI and CT operating hours.
  • In Richmond Hill, the government will fund Schroeder Ambulatory Centre, as Ontario already has more than 900 privately operated community surgical and diagnostic centres.
  • Critics, including the Ontario Health Coalition, said the expansion risks diverting resources from public hospitals, which say they need $1 billion; Jones said it is not an either/or situation.
  • Early next year the rollout will begin at four centres offering hip and knee replacements, building on recent expansions that included low-risk surgeries and diagnostic procedures.
