Ontario man sentenced for attempting to smuggle cannabis on Vancouver-London flight
Alaaddin Koc, 56, was caught with about 31 kilograms of cannabis in his luggage and received a one-year prison term and lifetime firearms ban.
On September 1, Alaaddin Koc, a Windsor, Ontario, resident, was sentenced to one year in prison for possession of cannabis for the purpose of exportation, with a lifetime firearms ban imposed.
Canada Border Services Agency intercepted Koc at Vancouver International Airport on October 28, 2024, seizing approximately 31 kilograms of cannabis from his luggage destined for London's Heathrow Airport.
Following an investigation by the RCMP's Federal Policing Pacific Region, Koc pled guilty to possession of cannabis for exportation after he was arrested and released pending further investigation.
Police approved charges under the Cannabis Act, but Koc failed to appear in court, prompting a Canada-wide arrest warrant before he was located in Ontario.
Rhonda Hislop, acting officer in charge of the FPPR Border Integrity Program, noted that an active illicit cannabis market persists in Canada despite legalization, keeping outbound drug flow a priority.
