Ontario man accused of stealing Texas Republican Party data pleads guilty in Canada
Crown prosecutors seek a 2.5-year sentence after Aubrey Cottle admitted three charges tied to the Texas GOP cyberattack and a bail breach.
- On Thursday, Aubrey Cottle pleaded guilty in a Newmarket, Ont., courthouse to three charges, including fraudulently obtaining computer services and causing mischief to data belonging to the Texas Republican Party.
- Cottle, associated with the hacker collective Anonymous, was charged for his role in the September 2021 cyberattack that infiltrated web-hosting company Epik to deface the Texas GOP website and leak personal data.
- Detained at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, Ont., since October, Cottle has spent 240 days in a facility frequently under lockdown, stating, "I need to be there for my son."
- Crown counsel David Tice argued against vigilantism as the court prepares to deliver a sentencing decision on June 26, with the Crown seeking 2.5 years and the defence requesting time served.
- Lawyers Arash Ghiassi and Riaz Sayani argue Canada should refuse to extradite Cottle to the United States, asserting he should not be prosecuted or punished twice for the same conduct.
