Popular Supplement Increases Strength Even Without Exercise, Study Shows
A 12-week trial found 10 grams a day increased lean tissue and improved bench-press and leg-press strength in sedentary adults, researchers said.
- Published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, new research suggests Creatine helps adults ages 45 to 65 gain lean tissue and strength, even without a structured Exercise program.
- The 12-week trial included 64 sedentary participants randomized to take either a placebo or 10 grams of daily Creatine, with volunteers choosing whether to join an Exercise and diet intervention program.
- Among the 26 volunteers who opted out of the Exercise program, Creatine users still increased their lean tissue mass and strength, while those who followed the program with Creatine saw greater fat reduction.
- Obtaining the 10 grams used in the study through diet would require eating five to 10 pounds of meat or fish daily, Richard Kreider of the Sport Nutrition Lab at Texas University noted.
- While emerging evidence suggests Creatine may influence brain function and memory, Jason Mitchell, the chief medical officer at Geisinger, warns that supplements cannot replace Exercise or directly cause fat loss.
