One Nation’s shock new member revealed
Bernardi joins One Nation amid rising support, with the party polling at 26% compared to the Coalition's 19%, and will lead the upper house ticket in the South Australian election.
- On Monday night, Pauline Hanson announced Cory Bernardi, a former Liberal senator, has joined One Nation and will lead its Legislative Council ticket in March.
- After months of turmoil in the Coalition, the recruitment follows a surge in One Nation support and Barnaby Joyce joining the party late last year, while Bernardi said One Nation is the only genuine alternative in South Australia.
- Bernardi's record shows he served as a senator from 2006 until resigning in 2020 after a 13-year career, quit the Liberals in 2017 to form the Australian Conservatives, and last week signalled support for One Nation on his online blog.
- Under South Australia's upper house rules, One Nation will need slightly more than 8 per cent of the vote to get Mr Bernardi elected, while the latest RedBridge poll shows One Nation at 26 per cent versus 19 per cent for the Coalition.
- With the March 21 vote looming, Jill Sheppard, politics lecturer at Australian National University, warned Hanson faces a test over party identity and compatibility with Joyce, saying, "There's going to be personality issues between Barnaby Joyce and Pauline Hanson.
