One Extraordinary Photo: Players avoid injury and create a moment of parallel soccer symmetry
Ashley Landis used a 1/2,500-second shutter and 20 frames per second to capture the split-second moment when two players avoided a collision.
On Saturday, The Associated Press photographer Ashley Landis captured a striking image of Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo flying over Sweden defender Gustaf Lagerbielke during a World Cup Group F soccer match in Houston.
Lagerbielke was running at full speed toward Gakpo in an attempt to take control of the ball, creating a moment of potential danger as the players converged on the field.
Landis utilized a shutter speed of 1/2500 of a second and a frame rate of 20 frames per second to document the agility of both athletes during the intense sequence.
Fortunately, the collision was not harmful, as one player went low and the other high, allowing both to control their bodies and avoid injury while demonstrating significant athletic skill.
Landis, who has worked in photography for 21 years, covers sports and news for The Associated Press in Houston, showcasing expertise in capturing split-second athletic moments.
