OMERS Earns 4.8% Net Return in First Half of Year
Strong public equity gains and currency tailwinds helped OMERS add nearly $7 billion and lift net assets to $151.6 billion.
On Tuesday, pension fund manager OMERS reported a 4.8% net investment return for the first six months of 2026, generating a $6.9 billion gain with net assets reaching $151.6 billion.
Public equities primarily drove performance as global equity markets reached record highs, supported by strong corporate earnings and investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence-related investments, according to chief financial and strategy officer Jonathan Simmons.
OMERS invested another $1 billion into Canadian equities during the first half of 2026, while President and CEO Blake Hutcheson reaffirmed commitment to adding at least $10 billion in new Canadian investments over the next five years.
As a pension plan paying benefits over decades, OMERS maintains a steady long-term focus, having added more than $78 billion to the plan over the last 10 years through its diversified portfolio.
Managing the remainder of 2026, Hutcheson noted the fund aims to actively oversee its existing portfolio while assessing opportunities to deploy capital that meet risk-adjusted return targets.
