- On Tuesday, more than 80 human rights and sport advocacy organisations urged the International Olympic Committee to abandon reported proposals for universal genetic sex testing and bans on transgender and intersex competitors.
- The IOC halted universal sex testing in the 1990s and discontinued it after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but Kirsty Coventry, IOC president, recently signalled she may reinstate testing; World Athletics introduced an SRY gene test last year.
- International bodies and rights groups denounced the proposals as discriminatory, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Women, and the World Medical Association condemning sex testing as harmful.
- An IOC spokesperson told Reuters on Wednesday the female category working group is continuing discussions, while several major federations have barred athletes who underwent male puberty, affecting Imane Khelif.
- Representatives warned reinstating chromosomal and hormonal testing at the 2028 Olympics would set women’s sports back 30 years and contradict the IOC's 2021 Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination; Julia Ehrt, ILGA World's Executive Director, said 'Sport should be a place of belonging'.
