IOC Urged to Drop Reported Gender Test Plans

Over 80 groups warn the IOC that genetic sex testing and bans on transgender and intersex athletes would violate rights and harm gender equity in sports.

  • On Tuesday, more than 80 human rights and sport advocacy organisations urged the International Olympic Committee to abandon reported proposals for universal genetic sex testing and bans on transgender and intersex competitors.
  • The IOC halted universal sex testing in the 1990s and discontinued it after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but Kirsty Coventry, IOC president, recently signalled she may reinstate testing; World Athletics introduced an SRY gene test last year.
  • International bodies and rights groups denounced the proposals as discriminatory, with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Women, and the World Medical Association condemning sex testing as harmful.
  • An IOC spokesperson told Reuters on Wednesday the female category working group is continuing discussions, while several major federations have barred athletes who underwent male puberty, affecting Imane Khelif.
  • Representatives warned reinstating chromosomal and hormonal testing at the 2028 Olympics would set women’s sports back 30 years and contradict the IOC's 2021 Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination; Julia Ehrt, ILGA World's Executive Director, said 'Sport should be a place of belonging'.
