Edmonton Oilers Put Veteran Centre Nugent-Hopkins on Injured Reserve
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will miss at least one more game after an injury in practice, and the Oilers recalled Josh Samanski under emergency conditions.
On Thursday, the Edmonton Oilers placed forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on injured reserve following a lower-body injury suffered in practice Monday, while recalling forward Josh Samanski from AHL Bakersfield.
Alongside Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers placed forward Matt Savoie and defenseman Alec Regula on the long-term injured reserve list, creating the roster shortage that triggered the emergency recall.
Under NHL rules, "emergency conditions" occur when a team falls below two goalies, six defensemen, and 12 forwards, allowing clubs to bypass standard waiver requirements for recalled players.
Samanski, a German-born forward, joins the roster from AHL Bakersfield under a two-year $1.95 million contract signed April 2, 2025, bringing prior experience with two goals and two assists in Edmonton games.
Head coach Mike Babcock listed Nugent-Hopkins as day-to-day but noted it "usually means two weeks," as the team looks to recover from a 6-5 overtime loss to Vancouver in Tuesday's season opener.
