LDS Church Highlights Kirtland Temple as New Ohio Temple Nears Dedication
The historic site drew 53,000 visitors in 2025 as the church said the new temple in nearby Independence will be its first functioning one in northern Ohio in nearly two centuries.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will dedicate a new temple in Independence, Ohio, on August 16, marking the first functioning LDS temple in northern Ohio in nearly two centuries.
In 2024, the LDS church purchased the Kirtland temple from the Community of Christ for $192.5 million, preserving the site as the origin of all Latter-day Saint temples. The acquisition marked a major transfer of historic properties between the two churches.
More than 53,000 people visited the Kirtland site in 2025, where founder Joseph Smith initiated early rituals including foot-washing and anointing rites within assembly halls that remain open to the public.
Located 48 kilometers from historic Kirtland, the new Independence temple features a modern design with a cupola honoring its forerunner, said Mathias Held, an official with the church's temple department.
The church will dedicate a new temple in Brazil on the same day, part of an unprecedented global expansion of sites meant to serve members worldwide.
