Officials warn of tuberculosis outbreak at California high school
At least three TB cases triggered mass testing and contact tracing at Archbishop Riordan High School with hybrid learning starting Feb. 9 to limit spread, officials said.
- Following confirmation of a third TB case, Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco canceled classes on Friday, January 30, and shifted to remote and hybrid options, SFDPH said.
- The outbreak traces to an initial case reported Nov. 17, prompting testing on students and staff between January 20 and February 13 due to TB's slow growth and incubation of up to 10 weeks.
- Health officials implemented contact tracing and testing, recommending masking and symptom monitoring while assessing transmission risk as "moderate" during screening.
- Then, beginning Feb. 9, hybrid learning will start and continue through Feb. 20, while all students and staff must test by Feb. 20 or be barred from campus and indoor activities.
- The outbreak affects about 1,150 students and 10 staff, and Dr. Monica Gandhi said TB is treatable but can last months.
