Officials issue urgent warning over popular ready-to-eat meals
The alert covers Walmart's Marketside pasta meals linked to a listeria outbreak that caused 4 deaths and at least 20 illnesses, urging consumers to discard or return products.
- On September 25, 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's FSIS issued a public health alert for Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce sold at Walmart stores nationwide with best-by dates Sept. 22 through Oct. 1, 2025.
- FreshRealm's testing found Listeria in the linguine, and the pre-cooked pasta ingredient came from Nate's Fine Foods of Roseville, California.
- FreshRealm advised pulling the meals from shelves this week, and Walmart officials said they stopped sales and removed the product from stores while investigating.
- Consumers who purchased the affected meals are being told not to eat them and to discard or return them, as listeria can cause serious illness in pregnant people, older adults and persons with weakened immune systems with symptom window up to 10 weeks after exposure.
- The USDA expanded the alert to include Trader Joe's Cajun-style blackened chicken breast fettuccine Alfredo, with ongoing testing to determine if the bacteria are genetically related to the outbreak strain, as cases spread to 15 states since August 2024.
