Another Gold for Ireland as Kate O'Connor Wins Heptathlon in Outstanding Style
On Saturday, 25-year-old Kate O'Connor secured heptathlon gold at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, establishing a new Irish record of 6,751 points.
Following a strong Friday start, O'Connor entered Saturday's final events in the lead, ultimately securing victory by finishing third in the 800m ahead of rivals Emma Oosterwegel and Sofie Dokter.
Speaking to RTE Sport, O'Connor said, "That was the most nerve-wracking 800 of my whole life," while maintaining a 3.5-second safety margin over Oosterwegel to guarantee the title.
Dedicated to her late grandmother, O'Connor credited her father and trainer, Michael, for his unwavering support throughout a challenging year of intense competition.
This gold brings Ireland's athletics tally to three at the championships, capping a sensational week as O'Connor eyes momentum toward the 2028 LA Olympics.
