The eastern border of the European Union and NATO is the Polish-Belarusian border, where a 186-kilometer-long steel fence has been built. For years, it has been guarded not only by the border guard, but also by the army. On-site report from the Białowieża Forest.
This year alone, over 11,000 attempts to cross the border from Belarus into Latvia have been stopped. Latvian authorities describe the migrants as a hybrid threat orchestrated by Belarus and Russia. “The aim is to destabilize the EU,” says the head of a border crossing that has been closed due to the hybrid threat.
Latvia accused Russia and Belarus of transporting migrants across the border before the Seimas elections, where more than 11,000 people have been deployed since the beginning of the year.
