NYC Street Renamed for Off-Duty NYPD Officer Who Died in 9/11 Terror Attacks

- On Saturday, New York City officials and family members renamed the corner of Madison Avenue and East 101st Street as "John William Perry Way" to honor the late NYPD Officer John William Perry.
- Perry, who was off-duty at NYPD headquarters filing retirement papers on 9/11, abandoned his plans after learning of the attacks and rushed to the World Trade Center, where he died in the collapse.
- Perry was the only off-duty officer among 23 NYPD members killed that day; beyond police work, he was an attorney, actor, and polyglot who volunteered with the New York Civil Liberties Union.
- "I think it's so cool that he's gonna be a part of New York City forever," said his sister, Janice Perry-Montoya, as she and brother Joel Perry unveiled the sign.
