NRO Taps EarthDaily, Iceye, Pixxel to Expand Commercial Data Pipeline
The awards will test commercial electro-optical, radio-frequency and hyperspectral data as the agency expands its use of private satellite imagery.
- On Monday, May 4, the National Reconnaissance Office awarded new contracts to EarthDaily, ICEYE, and Pixxel under its Commercial Solutions Opening program, NRO official Pete Muend announced at the GEOINT Symposium.
- The Commercial Solutions Opening program, launched last year, bypasses traditional procurement to accelerate evaluation of emerging commercial technologies with fewer upfront requirements than earlier contracting approaches.
- Each company provides distinct sensing capabilities: EarthDaily supplies multispectral imagery, ICEYE offers radio-frequency geo-location data, and Indian startup Pixxel contributes hyperspectral imaging across hundreds of spectral bands.
- To manage ecosystem risks, the NRO implemented a three-tier classification system for vendors; Muend said ICEYE was elevated to an "industrial standard provider" after implementing enhanced cyber protections.
- The NRO strives to ensure commercial data integrates seamlessly with intelligence workflows, including meeting requirements for the U.S. Space Force's Tactical Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Tracking program.
