Norway to buy two more submarines, long-range missiles
Norway will invest $6.4 billion to add two submarines and acquire long-range missiles, enhancing NATO’s deterrence amid increased Russian activity, officials said.
- On Dec 5, Norway announced plans to spend 65 billion Norwegian kroner to buy two additional submarines from Thyssenkrupp marine division , Germany, adding to four previously ordered.
- In response to rising Russian activity, officials said increased operations in the North Atlantic and Barents Sea strain Norway's NATO role to monitor Bear Gap and Kola Peninsula.
- The government said the revised order will cost 46 billion crowns, with two of the four submarines under construction and the first expected in 2029, while Norway will fund a second German production line.
- Earlier this week, the United Kingdom and Norway agreed to operate a joint fleet of Type-26 frigates while six submarines help NATO monitor 2 million square kilometres of the North Atlantic.
