Island Firefighters Rotating in and Out of BC Wildfires
Northwest crews, volunteer firefighters and provincial staff are supporting containment efforts at several fires that have forced thousands to evacuate.
- The BC Wildfire Service redeployed multiple crews from the northwest to fight explosive wildfires in southeastern British Columbia, including the Bald Range fire near Summerland that swept toward the region on Friday.
- Northwestern B.C. dispatched four unit crews of up to 23 people each and five initial attack crews to the south Okanagan and Cariboo as fires forced thousands to evacuate.
- Comox firefighter Ryan Chittle described working 12-hour days protecting structures from rank 3 and 4 fire intensity, saying, "You're right there front and centre," during the intense firefight.
- Volunteer departments from Smithers, Telkwa, and Houston joined the provincial effort as the deadly Summerland wildfire forced 20,000 residents to evacuate their homes.
- Given low local fire activity, the Northwest Fire Centre maintains sufficient resources to respond to regional incidents while continuing support for southern centres as the season persists.
