Northwest communities receive nearly $160,000 for evacuation planning
Four Northwest communities will share $159,954 to improve evacuation routes and public-notification plans, the province said.
- On Sept. 9, the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund announced $159,954 in provincial funding for four Northwest communities to strengthen evacuation-route and public-notification planning.
- The four projects form a geographic corridor stretching from Kitimat on the coast north along the Hwy 37 corridor to Good Hope Lake, where limited road access and isolation complicate emergency response.
- Kitimat will receive $39,954 to assess transportation infrastructure and develop evacuation-route plans. The Iskut Band Council, the Tahltan Nation, and the Dease River First Nation will each receive $40,000.
- Trent Bossence, Kitimat fire chief and emergency program co-ordinator, said identifying potential challenges before emergencies occur helps the District protect residents and coordinate response efforts effectively.
- North of Dease Lake, the Dease River First Nation will develop evacuation and notification plans while providing emergency-preparedness education to residents. The project addresses a critical planning gap.
