Northlandia: In Cloquet, ski jumping is for kids

On Jan. 8, Cloquet Nordic Ski Club held an evening practice at Pine Valley, where 12-year-old Astrid Morris flew off the 40-meter jump, and volunteers maintained landings on hills from 10 to 40 meters.
Founded in 1961 by Joe Nowak, the program is tied to Northland ski tradition, which Ripp said joining the club means becoming part of that legacy.
With progressive coaching, jumpers advance from tiny hills to larger ones while club coaches and community volunteers ensure safety with adults atop jumps and raked landings; Charlotte Ripp said, `We have 60 ski jumpers and about 120 Nordic skiers.`
Ski jumping functions as a confidence builder for young athletes, boosting personal resolve and focus, while families of Cloquet club members enjoy a flexible, community-oriented sport and youth participants compete nationally with Olympic-level peers.
Participants range from about 3 years old to teens, with two adults in their 20s joining this year while athletes train year-round with running and roller-skiing.
