Nominations close in contest to be Scottish Labour’s new leader
Three MSPs are vying to replace Anas Sarwar, with members set to vote from August 28 after nominations close Monday at 10am.
Nominations close on Monday in the race to lead Scottish Labour, with candidates requiring support from at least three MSPs, three MPs, and two trade unions to reach the ballot.
Anas Sarwar stepped down last month to join the House of Lords, leaving Scottish Labour facing what Members describe as its "worst ever crisis" after the party's worst Holyrood election result.
Confirmed candidates Michael Marra, finance spokesperson, and Joe Fagan, a former council leader, are competing, while Monica Lennon seeks to join the ballot. Marra said the next leader must "renew" the party and "rediscover its moral purpose."
A series of hustings is planned before voting begins on August 28, with Members completing ballots until September 17 and the result declared on Saturday September 19.
Candidates warn that Scottish Labour must "change more than the faces at the top," with one supporter cautioning: "If we don't change, we'll be here again in five years.
