Nomination period for municipal election opens on Friday
Candidates can now file for mayor, councillor or trustee races, with third-party advertisers also able to register and filing fees set at $200 or $100.
On Friday, May 1, 2026, the nomination period for mayoral, council, and school-board trustee candidates opened across Ontario, with third-party advertiser registrations also commencing today ahead of the Oct. 26 election.
Ontario Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flack announced April 2 that the province is reducing regional council seats in Niagara from 32 to 13, including plans to appoint the regional chair rather than elect one.
To qualify, candidates must submit a form, pay a nomination fee, and provide at least 25 endorsement signatures. Hamilton is "prioritizing accessibility" with six days of advance polling and 59 polls in "high-density buildings."
Burlington residents may face changes under the Better Regional Governance Act, which proposes appointing the regional chair. Burlington allows online and in-person voting, though municipal elections generally exclude online or mail-in ballots.
With 180 days remaining until the Oct. 26 election, candidates have until Aug. 21 to file nomination papers. Municipal clerks will certify candidates by Aug. 24.
