‘No’: Moe shuts down Elon Musk’s calls for Saskatchewan to separate
Moe said Saskatchewan would stay in Canada after Musk urged 3 provinces to break away, while Alberta faces a referendum on separation.
On Wednesday, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe publicly rejected Elon Musk's suggestion that Saskatchewan and Alberta should separate from Canada, responding to the tech billionaire's posts on social media.
Musk's comments followed news regarding Quebec premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, who stated his dream of Quebec independence "will be realized one day," prompting the tech titan to argue the Prairie provinces should also separate.
Although Moe has previously spoken against Saskatchewan separating from Canada, he defended Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's right to include separation questions in referendums, noting Saskatchewan maintains similar plebiscite legislation.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith scheduled a referendum for Oct 19, asking voters whether to remain in Canada or pursue a binding vote on separation; Smith was not immediately available to comment on Musk's posts.
Moe told reporters in May that his government would "follow the law" if residents petitioned for a plebiscite, maintaining he is a true Canadian despite these legislative considerations regarding separation.
