The Slovenian government does not plan to reduce staff numbers in the public sector in the next two years, and would seek the public's opinion in a consultative referendum before a later restructuring, Prime Minister Janez Jansa announced on Sunday when presenting the 2027 and 2028 budget draft.
The public sector is expected to see changes, but for now this does not mean layoffs. There will be no 10% reduction in the number of employees in the next two years, Janez Janša assured, but employees will be reassigned to other jobs. He also announced a new consultative referendum, in which citizens would decide on "restructuring and reducing bureaucracy". This could take place this year, according to the Prime Minister.
