Google DeepMind Bets $75M on AI's Future in Hollywood with A24 Deal
DeepMind will invest about $75 million as the companies build tools through hands-on research with A24 filmmakers, officials said.
On Monday, Google DeepMind announced a $75 million investment into indie film studio A24, establishing a first-of-its-kind partnership to create AI tools for filmmaking.
Popular for hits like Backrooms and Everything Everywhere All At Once, A24 will collaborate with Google DeepMind to ensure future AI tools are shaped by creators themselves.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said, "We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them," noting the collaboration spans multiple projects.
Eli Collins, VP Product at Google DeepMind, described the initiative as "the beginning of a collaborative journey" where researchers will work side-by-side with filmmakers to test and build features.
The deal accelerates AI adoption in entertainment, following Netflix's purchase of Interpositive and Amazon's MGM Studios launching an AI unit, while deepening debates about director use of these tools.
