Nipper, stay! The future of a beloved dog statue on a New York warehouse is up in the air
City officials and preservationists are seeking landmark protections as the vacant warehouse beneath the 28-foot statue faces foreclosure and safety warnings.
Nipper, a 28-foot tall statue, has sat atop an Albany warehouse for nearly seven decades, but the building below has sat unused for a decade and was recently marked with a red placard warning of structural hazards.
Foreclosure litigation has stalled redevelopment for years, and nothing became of plans announced a decade ago to convert the space; by 2024, the Historic Albany Foundation placed the building on its list of places in peril.
Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs' office is working to add Nipper to the city's list of historic landmarks, which could protect the structure from damaging changes and make it eligible for state and federal historic preservation tax credits.
Serving as an unofficial mascot, Nipper appears on merchandise at the Fort Orange General Store, where owner Erica Cubello said items featuring the dog are bestsellers, highlighting local pride in the statue.
Cara Macri, director of preservation services for the Historic Albany Foundation, warned that removing the roughly four-ton statue would be logistically expensive, noting "if something happens to it, it's going to be kind of hard to take him off.
