Nigeria summons South African envoy over attacks on its nationals

Nigeria says 130 citizens have registered for voluntary evacuation as it presses South Africa to curb attacks on foreign nationals.

  • Saddled with an unemployment rate of over 30%, South Africa has long attracted African workers but has seen repeated anti-migrant violence in recent weeks, with the continent's most industrialised economy now roiling with xenophobic protests.
  • Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, spoke out against "xenophobic incidents" targeting Ghanaians, following a similar summons by Ghana in Accra last week that highlights growing anger across Africa over anti-migrant violence.
  • Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia condemned the violence as "unlawful," stating attacks violate constitutional values of dignity and equality, and instructed Police to "act decisively and without hesitation in addressing these incidents."
  • Foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, are being advised to remain indoors for their safety as escalating tensions persist, while Govt promises border upgrades and an immigration overhaul following recent anti-illegal immigration marches.
