Nigerian Army Rescues 12 Kidnapped Girls in Borno

The 12 girls were rescued from Boko Haram-linked captors and are now receiving medical care and psychological support at a secure military facility, the army said.

  • Operation Hadin Kai troops freed all 12 girls abducted in Mussa District, Askira/Uba, Borno State, late Saturday, Abubakar Mazhinyi confirmed `All 12 were released`.
  • The Army said Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province seized the girls while harvesting crops amid intensified clearance operations in the southern Borno axis.
  • Evacuated to a secure military facility are victims aged between 15 and 20, including Fatima Shaibu and Zainab Musa, with one girl freed earlier after saying she was nursing a baby.
  • President Bola Tinubu declared a security emergency, ordered mass recruitment of police and army personnel, and said `There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil` amid more than 300 children seized and over 265 still in captivity.
  • Despite losing momentum, Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province continue threatening the region, and the incident evokes the Chibok abduction with Borno state at the centre of a conflict that began 16 years ago.
