NFL Complains About Changes by Nielsen to TV Ratings Measurements
The updates add wearable co-viewing data, newer survey inputs and revised weighting to make audience estimates more accurate, Nielsen said.
- On Wednesday, Nielsen announced a series of enhancements to its Big Data + Panel measurement system, taking effect August 31 ahead of the fall TV season. The updates received approval from the Media Rating Council.
- The changes address previous client pushback regarding data latency in Nielsen's Advertising Research Foundation DASH universe estimates. These refinements aim to better align The Gauge report with industry currency ratings used to set ad rates.
- Nielsen will incorporate data from wearable devices that panelists wear like smart watches to capture co-viewing. This passive measurement, which does not require formal login, helps calculate out-of-home viewing more reliably.
- Integrating data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey and the National Hispanic Enumeration Survey improves Spanish-language demographic estimates. Nielsen also updated its machine-learning tool to prevent data from skewing toward older residents.
- As streaming approaches half of all U.S. TV usage, Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao said, "We are relentless in our pursuit of delivering the most accurate measurement possible." The updates position Nielsen as the industry standard amid evolving viewing habits.
