NI minister reveals death threat after culling of 51 cows
The minister said the review will examine DAERA’s decisions, veterinary oversight and whether the cull was handled proportionately.
On Monday, Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir appeared before the Stormont committee to address the June cattle cull near Fivemiletown, County Tyrone, announcing an independent external review of the operation.
The cull of 51 cattle followed a court-ordered deprivation order against a disqualified keeper; Minister Muir told MLAs the intervention addressed "grotesque" conditions, with approximately 33 animal carcasses discovered during inspections between 2022 and 2024.
DUP deputy leader Michelle McIlveen criticized the operation's "shoot-to-kill approach" outside Parliament Buildings, while Muir stated he received a death threat and must address "very real impact of some of the misleading and inaccurate reporting."
Defending the operation, Muir cited "no reasonable alternative" due to safety risks and animal temperament, noting police officers who attended had "no concerns in relation to the operation" regarding the Humane Slaughter Team.
The independent review will be completed by early autumn to identify lessons quickly; UFU President John McLenaghan stated the farming community requires a "demonstrably independent, transparent and robust" process to restore confidence.
