Energy giants seeking to merge say they’ll extend Virginia residents’ bill credits and add jobs
The package doubles residential bill credits to $10 a month for four years and adds 1,000 Virginia jobs, the companies said.
On Monday, NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy announced an expanded $67 billion merger proposal in Virginia, offering increased residential bill credits and 600 new jobs to address policymaker skepticism.
Facing rising voter frustration over data centers and electric bills, the companies plan to redirect credits previously allocated to large data center customers, extending a $10 monthly residential bill credit to four years.
Financial commitments include adding $100 million to Dominion Energy's EnergyShare program through 2038, protecting current jobs for five years, and promising 1,000 additional jobs in Virginia.
Kajsa Foskey, director of the Virginia Energy Consumer Alliance, criticized the commitments, stating they offer 'no real consumer protections' and fail to address the regulatory structure causing 25% bill increases.
The State Corporation Commission will hold an evidentiary hearing in mid-November, while Gov. Abigail Spanberger remains 'deeply skeptical' of the acquisition ahead of the expected 2027 closing.
