Newcastle Complete £52m Signing of 'Proven Winner' Gonzalez
Newcastle and Manchester City have signed all documents for the £50 million move, with Nico González expected to complete the transfer soon.
On Wednesday, Newcastle United unveiled £50m signing Nico Gonzalez to the St James' Park crowd ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against West Bromwich Albion after he arrived on Tyneside on Tuesday.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle sought an experienced midfielder following the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer, making Gonzalez, a 24-year-old Barcelona academy product, his priority target.
Gonzalez featured 68 times for Porto and brings elite experience from Europe's top leagues, with head coach Jaissle calling him a 'really strong ball carrier' who is 'composed under pressure.'
Signing a long-term deal to wear the No.6 shirt, Gonzalez expressed excitement about the project, saying: 'I can't wait to experience that as a home player' at St James' Park.
This transfer marks Newcastle's seventh summer signing, pushing total spending to around £220million as Gonzalez joins recent arrivals Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba in Jaissle's midfield rebuild.
Newcastle United confirmed Wednesday the signing of the Spanish midfielder Nico González, coming from Manchester City, in exchange for 50 million pounds (58 million euros).
