New York Department of Labor Announces Systems Update, November 2 Blackout
The overhaul will take the portal and hotline offline for up to 12 days and delay payments for more than 100,000 recipients, officials said.
Starting at 5 p.m. on November 2, the New York State Department of Labor will pause all online and phone-based unemployment services for 9 to 12 days during a transition to a new cloud-based system.
Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said the state is replacing its 50-year-old intake process because the legacy system struggled to meet modern customer needs and drove massive call volumes over incomplete claims.
The agency awarded a $188 million contract to Tata Consultancy Services to build a mobile-friendly portal enabling real-time, 24/7 claim status tracking and document uploads.
During the 9 to 12-day outage, recipients will not receive checks; however, they will receive retroactive payments for the missed period once the system returns in mid-November.
To remain eligible for benefits, unemployed New Yorkers must continue completing three weekly job search activities and keep records to submit once the system is back online.
