NYC Health Department Reports First Human West Nile Virus Case of 2026

Health officials said more than 1,000 mosquito pools tested positive citywide as residents are urged to use repellent and drain standing water.

  • New York City health officials announced Wednesday the city's first human case of West Nile virus this year, with the resident having contracted the illness after spending time outdoors at multiple locations outside the five boroughs.
  • Surveillance teams have identified 1,284 mosquito pools testing positive for West Nile virus across Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan since the season began. Activity typically peaks in August and September.
  • While most infections remain asymptomatic, about 1 in 150 people develop severe West Nile neuroinvasive disease affecting the brain and spinal cord. People 60 and older and those with weakened immune systems face the highest risk of serious illness.
  • NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin urged residents to "wear insect repellent, cover up during dawn and dusk, and get rid of standing water around your home." The NYC Health Department has completed eight targeted mosquito-control spraying operations since July.
  • Nationally, 222 human cases of West Nile virus have been reported across 33 states so far this year, concentrated largely in Arizona, Texas, and California. The virus remains a seasonal concern through October.
