Volvo’s New Hazard Alerts Turn One Car’s Eyes Into a Fleet-Wide Safety Net

The update uses cloud-shared hazard data to warn nearby connected vehicles of animals, pedestrians, cyclists and roadworks, Volvo said.

  • Volvo is updating its EX60, EX90, and ES90 electric cars with new Connected Safety alerts that warn drivers of roadworks, accidents, pedestrians, cyclists, and animals by sharing hazard data between vehicles.
  • These vehicles upload hazard data to the cloud, alerting other connected cars nearby through the European Data for Road Safety partnership, which includes BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and Volkswagen Group.
  • EX90 and ES90 owners also receive a software update bringing Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio to Apple CarPlay, while Volvo was recently recognized by Global Mobility as the only traditional car maker achieving Level 5 capability.
  • Volvo safety chief Åsa Haglund stated the company prioritizes reliability over being first to market, emphasizing that warnings must be "trustworthy" or "only when you know drivers trust the system will it actually have an impact."
  • More than one million Volvo cars now have connected safety technology activated, supporting the brand's vision of zero collisions by providing relevant alerts while minimizing unnecessary information to drivers.
