Scientists have imaged how glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor, alters surrounding blood vessels and blood flow as it grows within healthy brain tissue. A newly developed ultrasound system allowed for simultaneous monitoring of tumor growth, brain activity, and changes in vascular structure.
When you move to a new place, one of the first things you might do is create a cozy "nest" for yourself—a space of your own, where everything is exactly how you want it. As it turns out, cancer can do something similar, albeit creepy.
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology in the US developed a three-mode ultrasound system that live-monitored the spread of glioblastoma cells in the mouse brain for 11 days after they invaded. The images revealed how the tumor affected brain tissue and the vascular network.
