MN-S Expands Affordable Housing in Northern Saskatchewan
The first phase includes homes in five communities, and the project will add 12 tiny homes with one accessible unit in each community.
- Wynter Philip, acting director of housing and homelessness with Métis Nation-Saskatchewan , announced eight new affordable homes opened across five northern Saskatchewan communities selected by regional representatives based on housing needs.
- The $3.26 million project received funding from federal and provincial governments through the National Housing Strategy and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, with MN-S contributing $1.58 million.
- Rent for these units is not based on household income and aims to be "at least 30 per cent lower than market rental rates," Philip said; one home in each community is accessible.
- Two homes were built by students through partnerships involving Dumont Technical Institute and Northlands College, while MN-S prioritizes Métis contractors and businesses during the public request for proposals process.
- The next phase will add 12 tiny homes in La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, and Cumberland House, with the project expected to be completed in spring 2027.
