Hochul: Anti-Terrorism Funding Cuts Jeopardizing Public Safety
Twelve states, led by New Jersey, challenge a 51% cut in Homeland Security grants that they say violates federal law and compromises public safety, officials said.
- On Monday, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin co-led a coalition of 12 attorneys general, including Connecticut, Delaware, and Massachusetts, in filing a lawsuit challenging DHS funding cuts.
- Following a federal court permanent injunction, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency cut funding on Saturday to states that do not divert law enforcement resources to assist federal immigration enforcement.
- New Jersey's grant allocation was halved from $18.9 million to $9.8 million, a 50% cut, while Gov. Kathy Hochul alleged DHS cut $187 million plus another $100 million on Friday.
- The attorneys general are seeking a temporary restraining order to block the cuts, and Platkin said they are taking immediate legal action to protect New Jerseyans' safety.
- The Homeland Security Grant Program was created after Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina and distributed more than $1 billion last fiscal year, funding National Guard patrols and hardened houses of worship, Hochul said the cuts raise vulnerability.
