New England Patriots Select Offensive Tackle Caleb Lomu From Utah Utes in First Round of NFL Draft
On Thursday night, the New England Patriots traded their 31st overall pick and a fourth-round selection to the Bills, moving up to select Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu at No. 28 in the NFL Draft.
Seeking to fortify their roster after a Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Patriots prioritized offensive line depth and entered the draft holding 11 picks.
Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf called the 6-foot-6, 313-pound Lomu "young," "experienced," and "athletic," saying "I was a little surprised that he was still available."
Starting left tackle Will Campbell remains in his position, though Wolf indicated it is a "possibility" that Lomu could compete at guard behind veteran Morgan Moses.
The Patriots continue the draft with selections in Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday, as coach Mike Vrabel steps away this weekend to begin counseling following an off-field distraction.
