LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Mondo Duplantis called his victory Thursday in a vibrant lakeside Diamond League event “the greatest pole vaulting competition ever.”
The Swedish pole vault champion fought a Diamond League battle with Greek Emanuel Karalis in Lausanne, and when he won, he failed to break the world record.
The Swede won in front of his great Greek rival in Lausanne, with a bar at 6.21 m, against 6.16 for Emmanouil Karalis. The two men improved the record of the meeting.
It was a Diamond League duel at high altitude. Emmanouil Karalis cleared 6.16, but as so many times before, the Greek had his superior in Armand Duplantis. Mondo tried twice for the world record of 6.32, but had to settle for 6.21.
Finnish spectators did not see Armand Duplantis break the world record.
