Tuesday Health Report: New AstraZeneca Drug May Be First to Reduce COPD Symptoms, FDA Approval Sought

- In two separate AstraZeneca-sponsored clinical trials, patients receiving 300 milligrams of tozorakimab injected every four weeks saw exacerbation rates drop to 1.41 and 1.44 events compared with 2.00 and 2.03 in placebo groups.
- The Food and Drug Administration granted tozorakimab priority review status as an add-on maintenance treatment, marking the first biologic drug to demonstrate efficacy in COPD management, according to AstraZeneca.
- Ongoing investigations are evaluating tozorakimab's potential use in asthma and lower respiratory tract disease, expanding the monoclonal antibody's role beyond COPD treatment as a therapeutic targeting interleukin-33.
