New DC monument displays the names of 41 million veterans
The interactive display uses two digital flags and an online database to let families and visitors find names from military records.
On the National Mall, the United Services Automobile Association installed a temporary National Military Monument for the America 250 commemoration, featuring two flag-shaped digital displays honoring more than 41 million service members.
To manage 41 million records, USAA aggregates names from national public records, including World War II Army enlistment data. Approximately 6,000 names cycle every 45 seconds across the towering flag structures.
Visitors can scan a QR code to search for specific service members on-site, while an online database at monument250.com enables remote searching. Staff assist in displaying chosen names on the flags for photographs.
Following "tremendous and overwhelming" feedback, USAA Communications Director Christian Bove announced the organization coordinated with the National Park Service to extend the monument's stay through Nov 12.
Because no single database is exhaustive, families may submit information for verification and future inclusion. USAA President and CEO Juan C. Andrade framed the project as honoring those who "stepped away from family and chose something greater.
