New Bedford Suspends Use of Flock Cameras, Officer Accused of Using System to Track Ex-Girlfriend
The department paused all Flock cameras and opened internal investigations after audits raised concerns about alleged misuse by one officer.
On Thursday, New Bedford District Court extended a six-month protective order against New Bedford Police Officer Emily Pacheco, who is accused of using the department's Flock Safety camera system to track her ex-girlfriend.
New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody suspended the department's use of Flock technology following recent audits that uncovered the alleged misuse and prompted an internal investigation.
Pacheco's attorney argued the vehicle was tracked during a legitimate drug investigation, while the ex-girlfriend testified Pacheco sent messages containing details only accessible through Flock database searches.
Flock Safety announced Thursday it is reducing data retention from 30 days to seven days and mandating audit tools to flag abnormal search behavior in response to the incident.
Kade Crockford, Director for Technology and Justice Programs at the ACLU of Massachusetts, warned that most states lack laws outlining consequences for law enforcement misuse, highlighting surveillance risks.
