New cultural arts centre in Kahnawake breeds hope for next generation
The $56 million centre will expand Mohawk language immersion and cultural programs supported by federal, provincial, and Hydro-Québec funding of $37 million.
- A new cultural arts centre is expected to open in Kahnawake, Quebec, in March 2026 to support language, theatre, and community programs.
- Construction began in fall 2023 on the roughly $56 million project after nearly a decade of planning and stalled longhouse projects in the same location.
- The centre will include a nearly 200-seat theatre, a museum, a Mohawk language immersion program, and an outdoor amphitheatre on a three-acre site.
- Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer, former grand chief and project leader, said reconciliation means 'to make things the way they were' and hopes the centre promotes healing and language use among youth.
- The community’s band council is raising an additional $4.4 million through a public campaign to complete the project and enable relocation of the existing language and cultural centre.
